Uruguay vs. Panama

Uruguay is ranked 14th in the current FIFA rankings, while Panama checks in 43rd. La Celeste, or Sky Blue, is what Uruguay’s national team is commonly referred to based on their kits. However, Panama might have one of the better nicknames, as Los Canaleros, or “The Canal Men” represents a very important part of that nation’s history. La Marea Roja, or The Red Tide, is pretty damn cool, too.

Panama has made noise on the national stage in the recent past, finishing as the runner-up at the 2023 Gold Cup. Remember, this team topped the United States in San Diego in the Gold Cup semifinals on penalties, before falling to Mexico 1-0 at SoFi Stadium on July 16, 2023.

While that is all well and good, it’s been a struggle since that highlight moment in Panamanian soccer history. Los Canaleros were thrashed 3-0 by Mexico in the Nations League semifinals while falling 1-0 to Jamaica in a 3rd-place game. Panama was on the short end of a 1-0 loss at home in an international friendly just six days ago, too, so it doesn’t exactly streak in with momentum. It won 3-1 on June 9 in a World Cup qualification match against Montserrat in Managua, Nicaragua, but allowing a goal to a side like that is a little alarming. It did keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 qualifier against Guyana at home on June 6, which was a better showing.

Uruguay steams in with plenty of confidence after paddling Mexico 4-0 in an international friendly in Denver on June 5. However, it was tripped up 2-1 by Cote d’Ivoire on March 26 in France, coming on the heels of a 1-1 draw against Basque Country in a Non-FIFA sanctioned friendly on March 23 in Bilbao.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa will have his side ready for Panama, but it will be up against some recent bad history. Uruguay hasn’t won their opening group match since 2019 at Copa America.

While Panama has surprised on the international stage, it has struggled mightily in its history against La Celeste. Uruguay has won all five previous meetings across all competitions, hitting the back of the net 15 times, while Panama has just one single goal across all matches.
